Japanesque Modern Committee
Kunio Nakamura, Chairman

Japanese industries face the challenges of escalating global competition and intensifying globalization. It is no exaggeration to say that only exceptional products or services will win a secure foothold in the global market. What typifies an exceptional work? It must have much more than a competitive edge in price, quality, and features. We believe that what sets Japanese works apart is the traditional Japanese view of nature.

Surrounded by sea, Japan enjoys changes of seasons and its unique climate and geography have led the Japanese to adopt distinctive beliefs about the nature of the world. For instance, Japanese craftsmanship has traditionally been inspired by the concept of infusing “divine power” into objects, by tireless attention to detail, and by constant refinement while remaining open to ideas from abroad. However, except for a limited number of successful cases, a gap has existed between the world of traditional arts and culture that represents traditional Japanese spiritual values, and advanced technology.

The Japanesque Modern Committee aims to establish and disseminate the concept of “Japanesque Modern” as a new Japanese brand and to enhance the international appeal and competitiveness of Japanese industry. To this end, we will strengthen collaboration among industry, academia, and government to create exceptional new products, content, and services that embody these traditional values by drawing on the nation’s traditional culture.
